Talan's Expertise Makes the Difference

Talan created a modern data platform for a critical energy provider in the United Kingdom.

THE CHALLENGE

Wind energy is vital to the UK’s energy infrastructure. To meet national sustainability and competitiveness goals, wind-generated electricity must be efficiently harnessed, stored and delivered in a reliable and cost-effective manner. This requires not only physical infrastructure, such as turbines, batteries, and grid connections, but also advanced digital systems for data integration and operational efficiency.

Previously, our client captured wind turbine data through a web application written in C# by a single developer. It enabled the collection, communication, and visualisation of raw data.

Battery data, meanwhile, was managed separately through a distinct Pythonbased system hosted on AWS with a PostgreSQL database. These independent systems, akin to separate ‘cottage industries’, relied on individual developers who evolved their solutions organically.

To maximise efficiency and resilience, an integrated approach was needed to ensure seamless interoperability between wind turbine and battery data systems. A unified digital strategy would enhance scalability, optimisation, and long-term sustainability across the UK’s renewable energy landscape.

THE SOLUTION

Talan’s UK Data and AI team partnered with one of the country’s largest utility companies to modernise and integrate their data pipeline ensuring it was as robust, secure, and accessible as their energy infrastructure.

With investments in Snowflake for data management and Informatica for ETL processes, Talan leveraged its expertise to align the new architecture with the broader organisational ecosystem. A key requirement was integrating wind turbine and battery data with external electricity market insights, such as consumption trends, availability, and real-time pricing.

Talan consolidated two existing databases into a unified schema and migrated all historical and current data to Snowflake.

The team analysed and translated 14,000 lines of C# and Python code, ensuring continuity while enabling future scalability.

The process began with graphical modelling of existing scripts, providing clarity on data behaviours and dependencies. This informed the reconstruction of data pipelines in Informatica, streamlining data transformation and improving interoperability across systems.

By addressing interdependencies, Talan established a single, cohesive pipeline that maximised efficiency and resilience. Through this transformation, Talan delivered a futureproof data solution, improving accessibility, accuracy, and scalability while enabling deeper insights into the UK’s evolving energy landscape.

THE IMPACT

Talan’s migration of the combined solution to Snowflake meant that the consolidated database schema was now residing in a governed and controlled environment, as well as being able to benefit from the following:

  • Enhanced scalability and performance
  • Simplified data management
  • Structured data sharing
  • Stronger security and compliance

We also made best use of the governance functionality of Informatica around data cataloguing, controlled access and version control.

Completing the project has made the whole data pipeline far more robust.

Our work removed the dependence on a single resource for either of the separate databases and saved the costs, and increased resource required in managing multiple platforms and technologies.

The client can continue to develop the combined solution using in-house resource. Thanks to the streamlined system, they now have the time to focus on continuous improvement, rather than trouble shooting and root cause analysis.

Lets take action together!
